Growth and the Preservation and Protection of Our Environment

"To preserve the quality of life in Santa Rosa, we must take measures to protect our vistas, creeks, and open spaces. When I became a councilmember in 1998, I was  particularly  concerned about ridgetop monster mansions  in northeast Santa Rosa. The flattening and scouring of the ridges, the wholesale removal of trees and boulders, and the high-density construction have seriously impacted the natural beauty of our city. Unfortunately, the damage was done by prior City Councils and Planning Commissions, so, I have striven to strengthen our ordinances to preserve remaining hillsides and ridgetops."

"We must also protect creek corridors. Working with Save Open Space (SOS) and the  Friends of Paulin Creek neighborhood group, we successfully lobbied the Sonoma County Agricultural and Open Space District to purchase the Paulin Creek Canyon property."

"Still at risk is a beautiful property on southwest Santa Rosa: the Roseland Creek.  This pristine area may soon go under the bulldozer's swath if we are not pro-active.  There must be a balance between the preservation of open space and the necessity of building affordable housing.  I think that this can and should be done.  Working with Senator Chesbro and Supervisor Mike Reilly, we hope to utilize Prop. 40 moneys to preserve the forest and agricultural land found along Roseland Creek.  There is incredibly dense housing close by and the compacted business area along Sebastopol Road screams for quietness.  The research is overwhelming in the need for a quiet place carved out by nature to get away from the pressures of life.  Our children and future generations deserve our wise deliberation and action on just this kind of decision."
